Queen of Hoxton
A bar, club and art collective, the Queen of Hoxton holds court in the heart of the East End, entertaining her neighbours with an eclectic programme of music accompanied by a rolling gallery of art installations, photographic exhibitions, fringe theatre and screenings. The ground floor is an intricate blend of window etchings, graffiti, ivy and a landscape of benches and screens, while the games room takes in table-football, vintage pinball and a unique Brighton pier 1960s gaming rarity. The Queen’s alter ego appears in the basement bar; hosting film nights, fringe theatre and sweaty gigs: a youth club for the adults of the east side.
After a year of innovative programming, the Queen of Hoxton will celebrate their first birthday with a week of unique events featuring some of the finest DJs, bands and light shows that Europe has to offer. Kicking off the festivities on the 2nd March are the international disco punk sensation Who Made Who, dressed in their signature skeleton all-in-ones and accompanied by the ever wonderful Stop Making Me. While they raise the roof, Danielle Moore (Crazy P) will be spinning plates in the upstairs bar, accompanied by A Love Supreme and Prince Pac.
Never one to stop the party, The Queen keeps it coming on Wednesday 3rd March with an appearance from the famed Light Surgeons as part of the Film Friends Forever night. Upstairs is an extra special Indie Bingo featuring Art Brut, where partygoers are rewarded for their knowledge of Indie Music with special prizes.
Thursday 4th sees the re-launch of the newly redecorated ‘Queen of Hoxton Galleries’. With some of the freshest creative talent as well as established artists like the Pirates and Good Wives and Warriors, the Queen is showcasing this new outfit for all to see.
Friday is taken over by Cover to Cover, upstairs and down, which promises to be one of the highlights of the week with an appearance from the nine-piece Hackney Colliery Band playing covers of everything from the Backstreet Boys to Stevie Wonder. Manning the decks and keeping the crowd happy are Sean Rowley (Guilty Pleasures) and Christian Laing (Buttoned Down Disco / Shake, Rattle & Bowl) plus guests Mark Stone and Adam Brown.
As if this wasn’t enough, there’s another night to come out of the already packed week of wonder and delight. Saturday sees out the birthday week with Hoodwink. Highlights include appearances from the likes of Maurice Fulton (DFA / Tirk) Ray Mang (DFA / Mangled) and Get Shakes. More information can be found at www.thequeenofhoxton.co.uk.
