The VFM is a new website that, using the latest games technology, allows you to virtually stroll around a 3D farmers market world, where you can ‘meet’ the people that produce your food and drink via video streams and buy farmers market produce from more than 45 market stalls from the comfort of your own home, with your very own Virtual Farmer helping to guide you around.
I am not a tea connoisseur, though I am fast becoming one. Like so many things of a culinary nature, it is only when you taste the best of a certain produce that you realise how deprived you have been. And so it was on a brisk Saturday afternoon when I sampled a full Afternoon Tea experience at The Criterion, that I first laid my eyes, nose and palate upon Twinings ‘Signature Earl Grey’ from their Exquisite Loose Tea selection.
Knowing how obsessed I am with food, you would probably assume that I shop entirely at Farmers’ Markets and the finest artisan food stores. But I do have a normal life to lead too you know. Like everyone else, my time is restricted to gossiping in central London members’ clubs, perusing art galleries, dining at magnificent restaurants and, when the mood takes me, editing this renowned magazine. With such little free time left over, one needs to choose where one [...]

The cheese counter at Selfridges has long been a Mecca to fromageophiles in central London. The odd month sees the selection wither and there was a time earlier in the year when I thought their cheese buyer didn’t really like cheese very much at all, as the choice was somewhat limited to the stock cheeses you find in most good restaurants. So I was pleasantly surprised to find that their selection appears to have grown, and in the direction of [...]

The annual competition, run by the UK’s Guild of Fine Food, was staged this year in Las Palmas, Gran Canaria. It was only the second time the awards have been held outside Britain in their 21-year history. Over 150 judges [...]

I have become a middle-class tea snob. Not a tea connoisseur, mind you, but a snob, and there is a difference. For many years I have enjoyed a cup of Twinings Earl Grey of a morning, yet quite content to go ‘downmarket’ for the second cup of the day in the form of a PG Tips. A builder’s brew, perhaps, but hearty and warming nonetheless; the type of drink that makes it quite necessary to partake in a large fried [...]

When the chambermaids turn the bed down at night they wouldn’t have to leave a chocolate on the pillow; you could just eat the pillow itself. An idea for Willy Wonka perhaps, but sadly that’s where the fantasy ends. Hotel Chocolat are chocolatiers, and so far as I can glean, they do not own any hotels and if they do build a hotel out of chocolate, take note [...]

I first sampled this delightful and unusual extra virgin olive oil during a meal at Angela Hartnett’s restaurant, Murano. It was served in a dipping bowl along with various breads and some charcuterie. Locatelli is rumoured to use this oil in his restaurant too, and I’m not surprised – the quality and flavour is superb. The oil is made by the Sicilian vineyard Planeta, and is pressed from three varieties of Sicilian olives, picked a few weeks before the usual [...]
