I first sampled this delightful and unusual extra virgin olive oil during a meal at Angela Hartnett’s restaurant, Murano. It was served in a dipping bowl along with various breads and some charcuterie. Locatelli is rumoured to use this oil in his restaurant too, and I’m not surprised – the quality and flavour is superb.
The oil is made by the Sicilian vineyard Planeta, and is pressed from three varieties of Sicilian olives, picked a few weeks before the usual harvest. This creates an intensely fresh, green flavour that is reminiscent of a spring morning in the Italian countryside.
The oil is ideal for bread dipping, salad dressings or just on its own, dotted over fish and other dishes; perfect for those summertime snacks and picnics. It really is something quite different, and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who enjoys their olive oils.
It’s available from the Selfridge’s Food Hall and various online retailers, generally priced at £9.99.
