Asimina Suites Hotel, Paphos

Paphos, on Cyprus’s west coast, is the ideal blend of beach life, history and culture. As European Capital of Culture in 2017, it has plenty to keep you busy – from the beaches of Coral Bay to the markets and bars of the Old Town, to the relaxed Harbour area and the archeological sites, such as the Tomb of the Kings.

In between the Harbour and the airport, in an area known as Kato Paphos, is the five-star Constantinou Bros Asimina Suites Hotel – and it’s the ideal place to base yourself in Paphos. You have the seafront and promenade right in front of you, and a private beach to enjoy.

The Asimina Suites Hotel has a longstanding reputation for giving guests a warm Cypriot welcome. Staff go out of their way to make you feel at home. This is, in my view, the sign of a good hotel. On my first day, after a morning dip in the sea, I was greeted by a member of the management team who brought everyone complimentary strawberry smoothies to their sunbeds. A moment later, I was brought an ice-cold towel to cool me down as the weather was already hot, even in October. It’s details like these that make a place memorable and have guests coming back year after year.

As well as the beach on your doorstep, you also have the option of two outdoor freshwater pools, and an indoor pool complete with a jacuzzi. For a spot of pampering, there’s the Elixir spa with therapy rooms, as well as a hairdresser’s salon and a well-equipped gym. As Asimina Suites is an adults-only property, your peace and quiet won’t be disturbed as you relax by the pool or enjoy time on the beach.

The 110 suites vary in size from one-bedroom to executive-size, with private pool and jacuzzi. All have marble bathrooms, bath tubs and rain showers, plus balconies that overlook the sea so you can enjoy a glass of wine while taking in one of those famous Paphos sunsets.

There are four bars and three restaurants to choose from – the Kymata, which overlooks the sea; Estia, where the buffet breakfast and dinner are served, and the more formal A La Carte for fine dining. There’s also lively evening entertainment to round out your stay.

The Asimina Suites Hotel is just one of Constantinou Bros’ fantastic beachfront properties in Paphos. The other three include the adults-only Pioneer Beach Hotel, the family-friendly Athena Beach Hotel, and the more couple-focused Athena Royal Beach Hotel.

If you’ve had enough relaxation and wish to see some of historic Paphos, the Archaeological Park is a short bus ride away, or a long walk along the promenade. Paphos’s history dates back to the Neolithic era, and the area is steeped in the legend of Aphrodite (the Goddess of Love). It’s believed she was born on the island, and the Myceneans commemorated her with a temple in the 12th century BC.

The area is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and comprises a series of archaeological wonders, featuring the remnants of villas, palaces, theatres, fortresses, and tombs, all of immense architectural and historical significance. Not to be missed are the mosaics at ancient Nea Paphos (Aphrodite’s Sacred City), celebrated as some of the world’s most well-preserved artistic creations.

You could also take a trip up to Akamas National Park and see the Blue Lagoon, take a drive up to the Troodos Mountains and pop into one of the local wineries for a tasting, or visit Coral Bay and the nearby sea caves.

Whether you’re exploring its rich archaeological heritage, enjoying its wines or relaxing on its beaches, Paphos is perfect in spring or autumn when the weather is milder and the city less busy. But it’s the warmth of the people that will make you want to come back year after year.
