Hong Kong Sevens

With the Six Nations nearing its conclusion and the World Cup round the corner, Tom Leahy meets Will Greenwood for a tantalising peak into another rugby tournament, the fast and furious Hong Kong 7s…

I write this just after a turgid Italy vs. France game brings the fourth weekend of the 2015 Six Nations to a close. Fortunately for the broadcasters and us armchair fans, a Welsh victory over Ireland yesterday means that we go into the tournament’s last weekend with everything to play for and three possible victors.

Will England score enough points against a French side that has blown freezing cold, cold and then lukewarm during the tournament? Will Ireland manage to put away a Scotland side that is desperate to avoid another wooden spoon? Or can Wales rack up enough points against Italy to overcome their sizeable points difference versus Ireland and England?

Just before the start of the tournament, I managed a brief catch-up with world cup winner and former England and British Lions centre, Will Greenwood. Even though Will was out to publicise a trip he is leading to the Hong Kong 7s with Super Skills Experiences and Abercrombie and Kent, I also put a couple of rugby-related questions to him.

His pre-tournament tips that England and Ireland were the sides to watch and Jonathan Joseph, the player, look to be dead on. Certainly JJ’s four tries look to have won him a starting berth in England’s outside centre berth through to the Rugby World Cup, which starts with a match between England and Fiji at Twickenham in just six months time.

Until then, if you require a rugby fix and also want to make up for the lack of tries so far in this Six Nations tournament, a trip to the 7s could be the answer. A feast of running rugby and non-stop partying is probably a perfect antidote to the ten minutes of reset scrums per match, which is de-rigeur in the 15 man game at the moment. Hanging out with Will in Hong Kong won’t come cheap, but if you have £6,000 to spend on a luxury trip to the rugby, it sounds like just the ticket.
