Whisky Me Up, it’s National Scotch Day

0

Any malt aficionado worth their salt knows that World Whisk(e)y Day is celebrated on 27th March. Whether you enjoy your dram with or without the ‘e’, it’s a universally applied catch-all for malts, blends, bourbons, ryes, you name it.

But for those a little more discerning about their drams, you may raise your glass on 27th July, better known as National Scotch Day.

Begun, ironically, across the pond, it’s a US-led salute to the original whisky, celebrating all things about Scotland’s most famous export. Now, whether you’re a dyed-in-the-wool (should that be tartan?) expert, or making your first forays into the 140+ distilleries that range Caledonia, the world of whisky can be a mystifying one. The subtleties between distilleries (let alone regions), cask finishes, the range of expressions (I’m talking releases, not figures of speech); and because it’s such a personal experience it can be a daunting prospect to commit to buying a bottle when it might just not be your thing.

Thankfully, there’s a little outfit that can help with that.

The cool founders of East London’s famed Black Rock whisky bar, whose innovative whisky subscription service found fame – and three investors – in the Dragon’s Den, have created a ‘Whisky Me’ Traditional subscription offering, which delivers the best Scottish Single Malt Whiskies, directly to you every month.

In a bid to make quality spirits accessible to all – no tweed jackets, members clubs or inflated prices in sight – these monthly 6cl pouches (or bottles if you prefer) contain carefully selected Scotch whiskies, including those from lesser-known distilleries such as Isle of Raasay, Lochlea and Torabhaig.

And committed to sharing the knowledge and broadening our understanding, each dram comes with easy-to-understand tasting notes, pairing suggestions, and live online tastings – and, rest assured, the same spirit is never sent twice.

To mark the occasion, co-founders Thomas Aske and Tristan Stephenson have selected the following trio for Scotch aficionados to enjoy this National Scotch Day:

Deanston, Dragon’s Milk Stout Cask Finish

Distilled in 2012, Dragon’s Milk Stout Cask Finish (50.5% ABV) was initially matured in re-charred bourbon casks for around 8 years before a 2 year finishing in casks that previously held Dragon’s Milk stout. So, the naturally light and fruity nature of Deanston gets an additional lick of malt and roasted coffee spice. Pairs well with dark chocolate, espresso and, interestingly, scotch eggs.

Lochlea, Our Barley Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Lochlea’s Our Barley Single Malt Whisky (46% ABV) is made with barley and water, both sourced from Lochlea Farm located in the Scottish Lowlands. Crafted with care and precision, this whisky offers a distinctly smooth finish. Enjoy notes of malt, peach, and ice cream. As Lochlea’s first permanent release it creates a big impression. Pairs well with chocolate, ginger ale, and peach melba.

12-Year Old Dalmore Sherry Select Cask

Dalmore Sherry Select Cask (43% ABV) has spent its first ten years in ex-bourbon barrels before being transferred to sherry casks for the final two years of maturation. The Dalmore distillery, located in the Scottish Highlands, has a unique partnership with three Spanish cooperages (Tevasa, Vasyma and Paez) ensuring future supply of high-quality sherry barrels. Pairs well with chocolate fondue and mince pies…time to stock up for Christmas!

Whisky Me’s Traditional subscription is priced from £8.95 per month for a 6cl pouch of Single Malt Whisky or £45 per month for a 70cl bottle of Single Malt Whisky.  Alternatively, you can save and enjoy one month for free with a one-off payment of £96 for an annual pouch subscription or £495 for an annual bottle subscription.
